Fall Fare
Autumn brings with it an expansive list of lifestyle changes.
From cable knit sweaters and leather boots, to pumpkin spice lattes to candy apples.

There’s no difference in horticulture. Gone will be the sunflowers and phlox; followed by Asters and Anemones.
This is the time of year where we don’t just freshen up the gardens and planter boxes but we get creative with the fall fare available to us.
Here is a peak at the some of the plants we use this time of year…
Ornamental Cabbage & Kale
Though they are in the same family as the edible versions (Brassica) these plants are bred for their presentation and not for flavor.
Offering the typical rosette growth habit the centers are colorful. Purple to pink to creamy white. The frilled or ruffled leaves are the Ornamental Kale and the smooth leaved plants are the Cabbage. Great as accent plants in the garden or tucked into the planters.
Chrysanthemums or Hardy Mums
Chyrsanthemums are the quintessential fall flower. There are almost too many colors and forms to chose from. Singles and doubles, autumnal hues and pinks and whites and yellows.
This fall crop has a complicated start, it blooms in response to day length and if started in a greenhouse will be pinched and shaded for weeks until they can be set outside and brought to market. They can take a light frost and keep blooming into November.
Ornamental Grasses
Ornamental grasses are they best foil for fall plants. We love to work with Carex or Sedge grass. Carex is a large plant family of finely textured tufted grass with a variegated leaves. They tuck into a space giving a contrast to the other plant shapes in the garden.
Another great backdrop for cabbage and chrysanthemums is
Pennisetum setaceum rubrum or Bottle Brush Grass. Varieties sport upright growth habit with burgundy foliage. Their beautiful seed heads offer extra texture to plantings. We can surround these grasses with all the fall fare available.
Ornamental Peppers
Capsicum annuum or Ornamental Peppers boast colorful fruit that takes the fall garden to a whole new level. These lush plants with dark green glossy leaves are easy to maintain and offer several fruit per stem. The fruit is said to be super spicy hot, as they are bred for a beautiful fall display rather than the kitchen table.
There is a vast range of colors to choose from, from white to black. From orange to red to yellow to purple. There are plants that offer many pepper colors on a single plant.
